Intros & Expectations

Cassava

Cassava is a delicious tuber root found in the continents of the Americas, Africa, and Asia. It is estimated that over 500 million people agree with me in eating this delicious tuber. Depending on your food language you might also know Cassava as Fufu, Mangú, Sakora, etc. Cassava is known throughout Asia as Tapioca. The Bubble Tea Culture in Asia goes beyond guzzling teas and chewing tapioca. It is a place for loved ones to meet and interact with each other while playing never ending board games.

I grew up in Cameroon and Cassava is imprinted in Cameroonian food identity. Cassava in the morning is known as pap. Pap (Cassava oatmeal) often eaten with a deep fried sweet dough known as puff-puff. Have you ever experienced this deliciousness? If your answer is no, you better look high and low for a Cameroonian,(I am biased) …. Then say “Ah dey beg you for pap and puff-puff”. I just gave you free cool points. Cassava is a huge part of African and Asian gastronomic identity.

Water makes up 71% of the planet but 630 million people have no access to clean water. I experienced dysentery, cholera, and typhoid most of my childhood and tween years. I remember few classmates passing away from water borne related illnesses. I appreciate clean water in platitude of ways, I could never explain. It is a privilege to drink and wash in clean water. Africa and Asia have major water security concerns. My lack of access to clean water created my obsession with water. I grew up listening to epic stories that hail from lakes, rivers and the Atlantic Ocean. My Maternal lineage as it relates to their spirituality is deeply linked to the Ocean and this is part of their identity. With regards to not having access to clean water, please do not read that as tears of Afro-pessimism. I stand more on the middle of Afro-optimism.

I was born in the Lone Star State to an American father and a Cameroonian mother. I have stayed in the U.K, United States, and Cameroon. While I am a Texan by birth, I was re-born in Brooklyn, NY and my heart is forever in Anchorage, Alaska.

This blog is meant for you to go search, I give a seed you go plant the tree!!
