Food & Poison

A grocer at Gamagori, Japan accidentally sold some of the poisonous parts and the city is now on high alert. Fugu is a winter delicacy and a very expensive one. A blow fish will take you back $100-$200. I have never tried but I must admit it is very tempting as I enjoy sushi. I never try it because... Well mortality is a blow.

FAKE MEDICINE IN AFRICA

a8781a44cf7202b15834059ec2085bf4.jpg

World Health Organization (WHO) report counterfeit medicine is responsible for about 100,000 deaths a year in Africa. A 2016 report from Sanofi pharmaceutical discovered that counterfeit medicines laboratories that target the African market are in China, Indonesia, Ukraine, and Poland.

The need for such counterfeit medicine in global south spaces or developing countries in Africa, is a direct result of countries that do not reimbursed their governments for medical expenses.

Accountability goes back to African countries that lack their definitions of just what counterfeit medicine is, more African actors are needed in the pharmaceutical industries not just as consumers but as manufacturers, better regulations, and enforceable policies on legal enforcement for the sellers and manufacturers.

COLONIAL PERIOD

1502- Vasco Da Gama sailed from India to Africa at his arrival, he named the islands after himself, Les Amirantes (Admiral Islands). He is credited for discovering the island because none of the colored folks within distance ever dared to visit. I mean Seychelles is a hop and skip from two continents, but it took a European to “discover” this Island.

               ESTIMATED SHIP ARRIVALS TO SEYCHELLES

10 days from India
10 days from Saudi Arabia
4 days from Kenya
23 days from Portugal

I find it hard to believe that no one from these spaces “discovered” the island. In the late 1700s, the French colonized Seychelles and will name the island in honor of Viscount Jean Moreau de Sechelles (Minister of Finance, 1727 to 1743).

Seychelles has the highest Gross Domestic Products (GDPs) per capita in Africa ($15,410 in 2016), but increasingly the effects of climate change are placing its economy—which relies heavily on high-end tourism and exports of tuna—at risk.

As our other stories with "Empire" and Africa spaces go, there was a struggle from the French, British, Dutch, Arabs, and the Italians. They stopped by the island for precious stones, spices, and slaves. Similarly, to the early stories of Australia, Seychelles was used as a place to hold prisoners or exiles by the British.

Oddly enough, Seychelles keeps Somalian prisoners and it is all funded by the United Nations.

BLUE ECONOMICS & SUSTAINABILITY

BLUE ECONOMICS IN 2014

Seychelles relies heavily on tourism but the nation is on a mission to change that. The Island nation is trying to move away from being totally dependent on its tourism sector by developing its blue economy.

SUSTAINABILITY IN POLICY AND IN PRACTICE (ASSET #2)

The country has also taking a proactive approach instead of a reactive approach to dealing with sustainability and the blue economy of the country. Read below to understand more on the Seychelles Blue Economy Strategic Roadmap.

VISA RELATIONSHIP WITH THE REGION & power of passport? (BRANDING ASSET 3-4)

Country Branding done the right way “CAN” lead a country to the path of Soft Power. Remember, you can have a brand that is “sellable” but have no soft power. Despite the word SOFT, it is not easy to craft or apply into foreign policy.

The Maldives has a recognizable brand, spectacular views that really are “The sunny side of life” but struggle with poverty and health care.

The Republic of Seychelles was first to scrap visa requirements for other African nations, despite the feelings not been mutual. In return, the country now has the most powerful African passport. The Seychelles passport ranks number 1 in the continent, 26 globally with a total of 141 accessible countries.

Seychelles is home to one of the heaviest land tortoise, The Aldabra Giant tortoise born in 1846.

THE PEOPLE MUST BE CONSIDERED IN THE BRAND? (problem#1)

Marie Josee Bonne, Special Adviser, Ministry of Social Affairs, Community Development and Sports, Seychelles
Majority of the 115 islands are uninhabited, they are dedicated as nature reserves
The Seychelles has one of the most progressive social development policies in the developing world, arguably owing to its size and population of just over 860,000 people. The United Nations, however, believes the policies are workable, even in heavily populated countries. It says the model should be deployed in other African countries.

COUNTRY CARRIER AND TOURISM (ASSET #5)

We have discussed the importance of a country having a reliable safe country carrier. Air Seychelle might be a small airline but enjoys six major code share partnership agreements with Alitalia, Jet Airways, Air Serbia, Air France, South African Airways, and Etihad Airways that owns 40% of the airline. Tourist can also enjoy authentic creole music on board. Your airline is supposed to celebrate and sell your country brand but with your culture constantly on the background.

Friday Ramblings: The One About.. The Invisible Client, The Frozen Pipe, School Choices, and Uncle I need help?

                  The Invisible Client

What can I say about the Invisible Client? A presentation was given on behalf ESE & SEGYE and I was told no convincing was needed because                                                                              “We want to work with your company, you don’t need to convince us”.
I have received calls and text messages with assurances that the client wants to work with ESE & SEGYE but there were some abrupt changes in management. What can I say, when management is leadership in government? This meeting pending will dictate if I have to call my uncle below like a looser…

                                           The Frozen Pipe

e07768ee6254dfebde095b29af1ef52f.jpg

It was very cold this week, like it was 3-5 degrees and my pipes were completely frozen. No water to wash or make tea because everything was frozen. I found myself having a moment with my phobias. I must have used every profane word and swore to God in every language currently stored in my brain.

My phobia for dirt and OMG…..Do not judge me, the first decade of my life was in missionary school that was topped with attending a German school. You are beaten to cleanliness and dirt or filth just makes me want to screammmmmmmmmmm.

CRYING

I found myself wanting to cry AND cry. My father told me a longtime ago, I cried more than any of his kids as a child. Oh those words  became so true...
I do not cry and stop like normal regular people. It is long and gross, and I have things in my nose and no one can understand me. Yet, I will be asked 1 million times, “Fatimaah, why are you crying?”. Or I have a mate of mine that says, “Fati are you crying?” … No mate, I am bloody laughing, just why can you not see the joy in my face.

CRYING

2ae28f6ce977aca4f49f3372dfb565ce.jpg

I am particular about my space because of survival, fear and some people just lack hygiene. This is not about my anal views to hygiene, some people even if washed in bleach, would still come back gross.  The explanation below is why I have trust issues.

4c1c4f927e80830c6c083842b4e5affe.jpg

I open the shower door and there is a tray with utensils and clean plates. She washes her dishes in the same place that she showers and does the number one and two. What in the complete (Fill in the blanks). I sprayed Rose Water on my body (Antibacterial properties) and then Coconut Oil (Antibacterial)…

That was every version of nasty and ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww. I cried just a little, my friend from the states just started laughing on the phone hysterically. My father told me, at the very least, I never ate from her house.

I laughed hard and my friend asks, “But for real, you okay?” We are quiet because we both knew the backdrop to that question is heavy, but we start laughing again. My pipes were fixed later that day.

I am grateful for a friend that knows just why I have such phobias and for laughter. All parts of travel are not romantic, and SHIT happens.

So because of the weather and stress my inflamed joints made the week uncomfortable. My short leg, I would like to start saying my “Special leg”. My special leg that was deprived of length was not so much hurting, it was just throbbing. Oh and my left arm was hurting and in the morning, I woke up and scared me. It was like the cracking sounds sounded really bad, like damn I need to wake up slowly.
To be honest, I have not had ginger and turmeric for the last three weeks. This is also why I am in discomfort as well, but I could barely type. It was a bit frustrating and hard but I have to persevere.

School Choices

Uncle I need help...

My uncle is a man of little words, he is military and well this was the advice he gave me as a teenager.

BUT I AM HERE IN MY TRAIN OF THOUGHT

I have 14 days to pick up and tell him I have the phobia below and I need help.

Silk Road Thursdays: Soft Tools form Japan to Africa in the name of TICAD

— TICAD I-1993

THE UNITED NATIONS SITUATION

UN SECURITY COUNCIL NEEDS A CHANGE-2012

Kofi Annan, Former UN Secretary-General: It is indefensible today that India, Brazil, Africa and even Japan don't have permanent seats on the UN Security Council. This has to be changed or the Council will lose its influence and relevance.
Poverty Reduction and the incoporation of Africa into the global economy, includes 51 countries and 8 presidents
— TICAD II -1998

SIDEBAR #1

As more funding was poured in from Japan towards Africa Development it was reported by some African heads of states that Japan was using TICAD as a tool to get a seat into the UN Permanent Security Council. This would also cause some tension between Japan and China since China is still working on building better ties with Africa. For a country to get a seat on the Permanent Security Council, the country needs 2/3 of the U.N member states and all P5 members to approve. You can also imagine that China would NEVER EVER ALLOW Japan on the security council. There are ongoing discussions on reforming the UN Permanent Security Council.

.....Even in Japan, It is understood why this will never happen.......

While at the UN General Assembly, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe delivered a speech saying that his country will seek to become a permanent member of the Security Council. In order to achieve the goal, Shinzo Abe called for a reform of the international body.

UN PERMANENT SECURITY COUNCIL P-5

This group has not changed since 1945(WWII). They are the “final say” in matters of decisions concerning International Crisis. They have an incredible amount of HARD POWER. They are the largest arms exporters, highest military budgets, largest militaries and are all nuclear weapon states.

THE GOOD FOR JAPAN USING TICAD AS SOFT POWER?

THE PATH TO SOFT INFLUENCE IS VERY HARD

Japan and Africa have no colonial legacy, and to quote Abe about the Japan and Africa relationship "we have "Co- Manager" relationship. You gotta love the guy, he is really selling TICAD or Nippon-African Affairs by way of Soft influence. However, the beginning of TICAD came from under pressure not for the sake of more South to South corporation.

The Official Development Assistance by Japan historically was targeted towards Asia as compensation for Japan's role in the war. In the 80's as the world fell under the spell of Cool Japan, the economy blossomed TREMENDOUSLY. Japan was accused for not caring but you must appreciate why Japan for not wanting to be involved in anything not Japan.
Anyway, all that pressure for not caring about poor countries came in time as the West was not feeling as generous with development assistance towards Africa. Japan saw opportunity from the international pressure and this created TICAD 25 years ago.

TICAD allows Africa an added choice outside from the west. TICAD is an opportunity for Japan to flex soft power in a "neutral" space. It shows the global stage that Japan has learned lessons from war and is a fully rehabilitated state. Japan is also now key a player in South to South corporation.

The West and SOME neighbors of Japan have argued that TICAD is nothing more but the Japanization of Africa.

Japanization
The process in which Japanese culture dominates, assimilates, or influences other cultures....

Similarly

The Europeanization or Westernization in narratives and ideologies of spaces below the equator… Let us use that in a sentence…

The Europeanization in former colonial spaces has altered the definition of beauty, such as an Afro is unprofessional but straighter hair is professional.

….
The Westernization in societies will be that former colonial spaces speak dialects and Western nations (Former Colonial Masters) speak languages.

Yet the very definition of a language is “A system of conventional spoken, manual, or written symbols by means of which human beings, as members of a social group and participants in its culture, express themselves.”.

— Water & Cassava

But in soft power, you must have attraction and appeal. Japan is very attractive with TICAD as a tool of "Diplomacy of Resources" from Japan towards Africa.

Japan pledged $32 billion from 2013-2018 to Africa
— TICAD-V, 2013

How do you show of your appeal if you are Japan in Africa?? Appeal is desperately needed if you are going to execute soft power. We touched on just how states gain soft power and influence, but Japan is a bit complicated.

So, if you are Japan, you need appeal in your policies. Money is great, but your policies must be attractive. The attractive policies from Japan to Africa come with investment in Development within the sectors of: Agriculture, Infrastructure, Water Resources(Waterplomacy), Education, Health, Technology, and more Market Access.

Lastly, this part is very important in selling your soft power. You must make your new friends believe you are on the same level.  Prime Minister Abe described Japan and Africa as "Co-Manager". Now, this is exactly how uninterrupted seduction takes place, so when you say S&*T, it sounds like Sugar, Honey, Ice, Tea.

Sugar Honey Ice Tea #1

Japan has promised to fight for Africa to have a seat on the security council, this is something that none of the other Asia powerhouses have advocated for loudly. Well unless if you count the time, that India felt empowered to tell Namibia to relax on nuclear ambitions.
Can you imagine Bangladesh telling India to relax on ambitions to self-protect as neighboring Pakistan works on nuclear capabilities??? In the words from our Californian sisters known as
En Vogue

MAINTENANT, TU ES FOUTOU -(JAPAN TO CHINA)

That is French for "Fine, but you are screwed". This checkmate move from Japan towards China is a well thought out plan. You see Japan knowns that Africa states have no access and WILL NEVER HAVE to hard power or a chance to seat on the permanent security council.

Anyway, this move of advocacy from Japan towards African states puts China in a bind. I mean China says “No” to any Africa state fighting for a seat, Japan would suddenly become a friend to Africa like this...

Anytime You Need A Friend

This is petty from our Japanese friends but brilliant! In the event that you cannot deal directly with your enemy, by all means create a situation to make their policies and image weak. A Prussian General once said, War is the continuation of politics by other means and China is appreciating this on the behalf of Japan’s efforts towards Africa.

Prime Minister Abe stated “The enormous continent of Africa has given no permanent member to the United Nations Security Council. Agenda 2063 states clearly that by 2023, it will rectify this situation,”
Referring to a vision document by the African Union that was launched in 2013 in Addis Ababa to help develop Africa by 2063.

Read the documents below to see just how Africa states decided to screw themselves over and properly. They can sign such documents for peace but cannot come together for W.A.S.H related solutions that are permanent.

This is the second part to the Soft Power issues of  Japan in Africa. To catch up on the first part
